Between matches, CS2 players can now raise a chicken, choose its name, and fill a HatchBook with photos. The system arrived with the September 22, 2026 Rush Hour update, despite being absent from its launch notes. Follow this guide to claim an egg, manage feeding costs, and document your pet’s growth.
Claiming a Chicken Egg From Weekly Care Packages
Chicken Eggs can appear in Weekly Care Packages, unlocked by Prime players after their first XP rank-up of the week.
Availability: An egg is not guaranteed, and Valve has not published its drop odds.
Cost: Claiming one uses both weekly reward selections, replacing the two items you could otherwise choose.
Pet limit: Each account supports one active pet at a time.
Once claimed, the egg sits in a nest beside your main-menu agent. Eggs, feed, and chickens are untradable, with no supported way to buy them through the Steam Community Market.
Raising Your Pet From Egg to Hen
The progression has four stages: Egg, Chick, Pullet, and Hen. Growing older changes the bird’s appearance and opens additional interactions, while some poses become unavailable once it outgrows them.
Hatching Dates and Growth Stages
Expect roughly a week before hatching, although early owners reported waits closer to five days. Check the hatch date on your HatchBook cover instead of counting on exactly seven days. No verified method speeds this up through extra matches or XP.
The egg produces a small yellow chick, unlocking naming, inspection, and photography. At the pullet stage, its breed and colors appear. The hen is fully grown and gains more poses and tricks.
Chicken Feed and Weekly Reward Costs
Chicken Feed comes from later Weekly Care Packages and uses both reward selections, replacing your usual drops whenever you claim it.
Community researcher BeepIsla reports that food supplies stack, with these allowances:
Feeding detail
Reported food supply
Newly hatched chick
21 days
Each additional feed claim
Adds 21 days
Feed claimed immediately after hatching
About 42 days total
Low-food warning
Appears with roughly nine days remaining
These figures come from community research, not an official Valve schedule. They suggest you can skip feed some weeks while keeping your chicken fed, but check its food indicator before choosing other rewards.
Feeding an unhatched egg is not an established requirement. The interface’s food-warning calculation skips the egg stage.
Three Breeds and 34 Adult Color Variants
Current breed lists contain 34 adult color variants, ranging from familiar poultry colors to brighter combinations.

Counts of 35 commonly include the yellow chick. Higher totals can include additional materials not assigned to obtainable adult variants.
Individual seeds also affect body proportions and coloring. Valve has not published breed or color probabilities, and there is no confirmed way to choose or reroll the outcome. Eggshell color is not a verified rarity indicator.
Naming Your Chicken and Building Its HatchBook
Naming becomes available at the chick stage, costs nothing, and allows up to 20 characters. You receive another naming opportunity at each later growth stage. A Name Tag is unnecessary.
The HatchBook collects photographs across the bird’s life. Pose it with your CT or T agent, save shots, and arrange them into its album.
Valve’s October 5 patch notes confirmed: “Pet photobook pages now have localized text art.”
Photo Booth Hats, Poses, and Effects
The Photo Booth lets you adjust backgrounds, camera framing, lighting, filters, effects, and stickers. Your chicken’s age and completed achievements determine access to certain options.

Since the October 2 update, agents also wear their equipped gloves during Photo Booth sessions.
Pet Departures and the Memories Left Behind
Pet chickens are temporary. The game defines three departure outcomes:
Retirement: The bird leaves after its food runs out.
A Life Well Lived: The chicken reaches the end of its normal lifespan.
Unhatched: An egg expires before successfully hatching; the exact conditions remain unclear.
The food-related farewell reads: “Your pet has accepted a position elsewhere. The offer included meals.”
After weeks of taking photos, that empty space beside your agent might sting a little. The HatchBook remains accessible after your chicken leaves.
Growth Timers and Match Features Still Awaiting Confirmation
Figures circulating online suggest 22 days as a chick, 28 as a pullet, and 90 as a hen, totaling 140 days after hatching. These remain unverified community estimates.
The pullet description calls the bird “cleared to deploy with you.” That supports intended match participation, but behavior across individual modes, including Premier, still needs reliable confirmation. Custom-server showcases do not establish normal matchmaking behavior.
Valve also has not confirmed a paid Armory acquisition system or additional animal species. For now, use the dates and warnings shown for your own pet when planning its care.
