IEM Rio 2026 started with the big favorites out front, but Day 1 still brought pressure, close calls, and a few wild swings. Falcons pulled off a huge comeback, NAVI made the loudest statement, and Vitality stayed the team everyone wants to beat. Follow CSSpot for all the key results and next-round storylines.
Day 1 in Group A opened with a real scare for Falcons, then flipped into a one-sided finish fast. And then a tough clash between G2 and Gentle Mates.
Falcons started slow, but once they found their rhythm, the series was over. 3DMAX had full control early on Inferno and looked ready to steal the opener. Instead, Falcons reset, won key fights, and turned the map around with a huge second half before rolling through Ancient.
| Match | Map | Score | Key story |
|---|---|---|---|
| Falcons vs 3DMAX | Inferno | 13-10 Falcons | Falcons came back after trailing 9-1 early |
| Falcons vs 3DMAX | Ancient | 13-1 Falcons | Total stomp after the comeback win |
That swing changed the tone of the whole match. What looked like upset territory quickly became one-way traffic, and 3DMAX never recovered after losing Inferno.
Ilya Osipov “m0NESY” was the clear carry, landing 33 kills and taking over the server when Falcons needed someone to step up. Damjan Stoilkovski “kyxsan” also had a big impact, while Lucas Chastang “Lucky”’s hot start on Inferno faded out as the series slipped away.
G2 made it through Group A, but Gentle Mates gave them a real fight. The series went the full three maps, with Gentle Mates taking Inferno 13-8 before G2 answered back on Mirage 13-8 and closed it out with a clean 13-3 win on Overpass. For a favorite, it was the kind of opener that forces a team to lock in early and stop any upset momentum.
| Map Winner | Map | Score | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gentle Mates | Inferno | 13-8 | G2 got caught off guard early |
| G2 | Mirage | 13-8 | G2 reset and evened the series |
| G2 | Overpass | 13-3 | Full control from G2 to close it |
Antonio Martinez “MartinezSa” led the whole server with 45 kills and a 1.26 rating, which shows how much pressure Gentle Mates put on G2. Still, G2 had more players stepping up when the series got tight. Guy Iluz “NertZ” was the difference-maker with a 44-36 K-D, 21 assists, 14 opening kills, 90.2 ADR, and a 1.25 rating. Nikita Martynenko “HeavyGod” also dropped 44 kills, while Matúš Šimko “MATYS” and Vilius Keserauskas “tAk” helped keep the game steady.
That win sent G2 into a much bigger clash with Vitality, who swept RED Canids 13-4 on Nuke and 13-6 on Overpass, with Mathieu Herbaut “ZywOo” going huge at 45-18 and a 2.08 rating.
Group B kicked off with Natus Vincere making the biggest noise of the day. With FURIA and Aurora’s sweeps, while MOUZ struggled against Legacy.
NAVI opened their Rio run with the most brutal map of Day 1, smashing B8 13-0 on Ancient. It was a total stomp and the kind of start that puts every other team on notice. The series still went to three maps, but NAVI stayed in control when it mattered and closed it 2-1.
The map scores told the story clearly:
That quick reset after Inferno was the key. Instead of letting B8 build real upset pressure, NAVI snapped back right away on Dust2 and shut the door before the series could get messy.
The biggest numbers from the match came from these players:
Drin Shaqiri was the main difference-maker and looked especially sharp on Ancient, where he posted a 24-9 scoreline. B8 had one good punch on Inferno, but NAVI still left Day 1 with one of the strongest statements in the event.
FURIA had the easiest start out of the three teams. They beat Passion UA 2-0 and never looked close to losing control. Inferno ended 13-3, Mirage finished 13-7, and Mareks Gaļinskis “YEKINDAR” led the charge with a 32-17 K-D, 107.3 ADR, 10 opening kills, and a 1.76 rating. Yuri Santos “yuurih” stayed close behind at 31-14, while Danil Golubenko “molodoy” delivered a big moment with an AWP ace to close Mirage. It was a clean win, but the mood around the team still felt calm, not overconfident.
| Match | Result | Key takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| FURIA vs Passion UA | 2-0 | FURIA were in control from start to finish |
| MOUZ vs Legacy | 2-1 | Slow start, then MOUZ bounced back hard |
| Aurora vs HOTU | 2-0 | Comfortable opener, but Dust2 got tense |
MOUZ had a much rougher path. Legacy took Dust2 13-9 behind 22 kills from Eduardo Wolkmer “dumau”, which put the pressure on early. After that, MOUZ locked in, won Inferno 13-10, and then rolled through Mirage 13-4. Dorian Berman “xertioN” was their best player with a 1.31 rating, while Ludvig Brolin “Brollan” and Lotan Giladi “Spinx” stepped up at the right time.
Aurora Gaming landed somewhere in the middle. They beat HOTU 2-0, opening with a clean 13-4 on Mirage before surviving a much tighter 16-13 Dust2. Ali Haydar Yalçın “Wicadia” was the difference-maker with a 46-28 K-D and 113.6 ADR, while Özgür Eker “woxic” added 26 AWP kills.
Day 1 did more than move teams through the bracket. It gave IEM Rio 2026 an extra layer of tension. ESL put a $100,000 bonus on the table for any team that beats Team Vitality in the grand final, adding even more heat around the team everyone is chasing. After ZywOo opened the event with a 45-18 K-D and a 2.08 rating against RED Canids, that target only got bigger.
The player quotes also helped set the mood. G2’s tAk spoke about the Vitality matchup like a real chance to prove something, not just a hard draw. Spirit stand-in coach S0tF1k brought a different feeling, describing his reunion with former academy players as something close and familiar.
The next round now carries several strong storylines:
That is why Rio already feels alive. The bracket is moving, but the pressure is building even faster.
