Hostage Rescue is one of the traditional modes in Counter-Strike 2. The Counter-Terrorists’ goal is to free the hostages held by the Terrorists and bring them to a safe zone. The Terrorists must prevent this until the round ends or eliminate the opposing team.
Counter-Terrorists win if they rescue at least one hostage or eliminate all Terrorists.
Terrorists win if time runs out without a rescue, or if the CT team is completely eliminated.
A CT player can carry one hostage, but their movement speed is reduced. If the CS2 player dies, the hostage remains on the spot.
In Counter-Strike 2, the mode received major visual upgrades thanks to the Source 2 engine — realistic lighting, improved physics, and more responsive hostage AI. However, the mode is still rarely used in pro tournaments due to balance issues and a limited map pool.

Hostage Rescue remains a part of Counter-Strike’s legacy. Though not popular in esports, it’s valued by players for its teamwork and tactical depth.
