With the release of CS2, the competitive match format was changed — now it uses the MR12 system. This means that each side (Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists) plays a maximum of 12 rounds, making 24 rounds total in a match.
Victory goes to the team that first reaches 13 rounds.
If the score ends 12:12, then: in Premier and on the pro scene, overtime is played, while in standard Competitive mode the match ends in a draw.
In overtime, teams play 6 additional rounds (3 per side). Victory is achieved with 4 round wins. If the score is tied again: in Premier the match ends in a draw, while on the pro scene CS2 players keep playing until there is a winner.
In other modes the rules are different:
Wingman — MR8 format (first to 9 rounds).
Thus, the CS2 standard is MR12 (up to 24 rounds + overtimes), which makes games more dynamic and exciting.
